Take us through your career journey at Transurban – where did you start, where did you move to, and where are you now?
- Started in Operational Excellence (Delivery and Risk), focusing on process improvement and assurance. It was the perfect introduction to Transurban, giving me a birds-eye view of how our organisation connects the dots across technology, customer, and operations.
- Moved to the Victorian Business as Business Performance Manager, where I ended up managing our Victorian COVID-19 response (a chaotic but incredibly rewarding role!).
- Became Head of Strategy and Performance in Victoria.
- Following an operating model shift, transitioned into Australian Markets as Head of Performance and Enablement.
- And now, Head of Performance and Partners
Your career moves span completely different functions. How did you overcome the hesitation of stepping out of your comfort zone?
It was nerve-wracking! Moving into VIC Business, I could see that there was a gap, and that I had the right skills to fill that gap, but I had to convince the GM at the time that:
a) they had a gap, and;
b) I was the right person to fill it.
It took courage, but I just kept thinking, ‘The worst that can happen is they say no’. And even if they do, you can still keep doing the job you already have. Plus, I’d receive feedback on why not, so I could start building a path towards that next step.
What advice would you give to someone eyeing a Transurban job ad, but hesitant because they don’t tick every box?
If you already meet all the requirements, where’s the growth? Don’t sit in your comfort zone, find something that is going to challenge you and be willing to grow into it!
