Some roles at Transurban may include a video interview as part of the recruitment process. This is where you record your answers to questions using our video tool. If this applies to your application, your Talent Acquisition Advisor will let you know. To help you feel prepared, we’ve outlined some practical tips to support you before and during your video interview.

Before the Interview

1. Test your tech

  • Check your internet connection, camera and microphone: Run a test call with a friend or family member or use a video conferencing platform’s test feature to ensure everything works smoothly.
  • Make sure your device is fully charged or plugged in: A sudden shutdown due to low battery can disrupt your interview.

2. Choose a quiet, well-lit space

  • Natural light is best, but a lamp behind your screen works too: Good lighting ensures your face is clearly visible, which helps build rapport. Avoid backlighting that casts shadows.
  • Avoid noisy or distracting environments: Inform others in your household about the interview time, silence notifications, and close unnecessary tabs or apps.

3. Frame yourself well

  • Position the camera at eye level: This creates a natural line of sight.
  • Make sure your face is centered and clearly visible: Sit at a comfortable distance, so your head and shoulders are visible.

4. Dress as you would for an in-person interview

  • Wear what you would for an in-person interview: Choose attire that aligns with the company culture. Solid colors often work better on camera than busy patterns.

During the interview

1. Structure your answers

  • Use the STAR method to structure responses to prompts (this keeps your answers focused and impactful):
    • Situation: Briefly describe the context
    • Task: Explain your role or responsibility
    • Action: Detail the steps you took
    • Result: Share the outcome and impact.
  • If you need, pause briefly before answering: Taking a moment or two can help to express your thoughts.

2. Have notes handy

  • Keep key points or questions nearby, but don’t read from them: Use bullet points or sticky notes to jog your memory.

3. Use the practice tool

  • To get comfortable with the timing: Practice answering questions within a set time.
  • Adjust your camera angle and lighting: Make sure your setup is well-lit and clear.
  • Review your answers: Record yourself and watch it back to identify areas for improvement in clarity, pace, and expression.
  • Be mindful: Of when the recording starts and ends to ensure the video interview doesn’t capture any unintended or candid moments.
