Three students in candid images in the Transurban office.

Meet three of our industry-based learning students, who sat down with us for a coffee chat to discuss their time in the program, why they chose to continue their careers at Transurban, and most importantly, are they tea or coffee drinkers?

Meet Nilly, an Undergraduate Analyst

How has doing Industry Based Learning helped your career?
It opened my eyes to potential career opportunities for me. I always thought I'd have a linear software engineering pathway since I'm completing a software engineering degree, but I realised there are so many more roles outside the field that I can excel at, as skills are transferable!

What are you working on for Transurban at the moment?
I provide operational support and get to work on a variety of projects, including building a Splunk dashboard for one of our applications.

What made you want to stay at Transurban after the program?
I fell in love with my team and the workplace culture. I was also lucky enough to be a part of the Ignite Mentoring Program, where I met many people outside of my usual contacts - one thing that doesn't change from team to team is how happy everyone is to share knowledge.

Nilly’s preference: coffee in the morning, tea at night.

Meet Cynthian, an Undergraduate Analyst

What did you get out of doing industry-based learning at Transurban?
IBL at Transurban allowed me to come out of my shell, with everyone at Transurban being super friendly, I was able to improve my communication skills, as well as gain experience in new technologies.

What have you been working on lately?
I've just started my role in the Platform Site Reliability Engineering team and have had the opportunity to learn about using Splunk and about the operational side of the West Gate Tunnel.

Why did you choose to stay at Transurban?
The welcoming and collaborative environment at Transurban really left a lasting impression on me and drew me in to remain a part of the company. I love the office with a coffee machine on every floor! But most of all the open environment that encourages teamwork and fun!

Cynthian’s vote is in – it's coffee.

Meet Jamie, an Undergraduate Technical Analyst

What does work at Transurban look like for you lately?
The team I fall under is production support, which works under an operations environment. As such, we have a key role in managing issues and fixing them, and I have been playing a key role as my team’s on-call representative throughout the day. This includes answering queries from other teams on issues affecting us, managing incidents that others report to us, and fixing issues assigned to our team.

How did completing Industry Based Learning at Transurban help your career?
I was able to gain a good grasp of IT Service management under a 24/7 production support team. I learned how to deal with issues - how we spot them, and how we can resolve them. I also got to participate in many operations projects and maintenance works, which I don’t think I would’ve gotten to do elsewhere. This provided valuable learning opportunities and experience that allowed me to develop and enhance my technical and soft skills quite quickly!

What's your favourite thing about working at Transurban?
Other than my team, who have been absolutely amazing, I would say the various real-world learning opportunities I get to experience. I’ve gained knowledge on various systems and technologies that I never thought I would - from cloud computing to database management – which helped me become a more confident IT professional.

Jamie’s pick is tea, particularly in the morning which puts him in a good mood for the rest of the day.
